where the earth smokes: wandering around the Cecina valley - 4th part of 5
(Cecina valley (PI) - Toscana)

Let’s continue our tour listing some towns that absolutely deserve a visit:

La Leccia:
On the hills where the Cornia and the Pavone rivers rise, this village rises in 1028 as a Carolingian settlement.
In front of it the “Madonna del Libro” sanctuary.

Larderello:
The town, quite entirely an ENEL property, produces the 10% of the worldwide geothermal energy.
Of special interest the “Museo della geotermia”.

Montecerboli:
This medieval village retains the walls of a castle, dating back to 1003.
Here de Larderel built the first system for the borax extraction.

San Dalmazio:
This small medieval village is a very good starting point for a trip to the rural church of San Giovanni Battista and to the imposing Rocca Sillana.

Rocca Sillana:
This imposing stronghold towers above the whole valley.
Legend has it that it was built in 82 B.C. during the civil war between Mario and Silla (and from this maybe the etymology).
