We end our tour by visiting the austere fortress.
We saved it for last, not because less important, but because we wanted to give more prominence to the three splendid churches, much less known and therefore less visited.

Don't expect the usual aristocratic castle with sumptuous furnished rooms, it was a military fortress and therefore extremely austere but perhaps much more suggestive of life at that time.

A bit of history:
Erected between 1473 and 1475 where a fortified building already existed since the 12th century. Soncino was exposed to continuous turmoil of war, due to the rivalry between the Serenissima and the Duchy of Milan until 1454, when the borders were firmly defined, and it came under the rule of the Duchy.
Francesco Sforza had the fortress and walls reinforced.
After the mid-15th century, an additional round tower was erected and in 1473 the renovation of the fortress took only six months.
Over the years, the fortress passed under various dominations,
In 1499 it passed to the Venetians then it returned under the Duchy until 1535 when it became Spanish territory.
In 1536, at the behest of Emperor Charles V of Habsburg, the feud, and thus the fortress, was assigned to the Stampa family of Milan.
For almost all of the 18th century it suffered Austrian domination.
By testamentary disposition, the last Marquis of Soncino, Massimiliano Cesare Stampa, left the fortress to the municipality of Soncino.
