Sanvitale castle
(Fontanellato (PR) - Emilia Romagna)

The evocative Rocca Sanvitale rise up still surrounded by the broad moat.

The way to the village (worth itself a visit) starting from the external park-car displays it to the visitor in all its beauty.
Before entering, it’s better to have a walk through the quiet arcades of the square and then go on following the footpath that surrounds the moat.
Property of the Sanvitale family until 1948 it preserves the noble rooms still intact.
A peculiarity is represented by the gallery of the portraits of the family, because many of them are “invented”; to be noted the frescoes and the paintings by Felice Boselli.
In the Stronghold you can find a little treasure and an oddity.
There is one of the masterpieces of the Italian Mannerism: a little room frescoed by the Parmigianino in 1524 representing the myth of Diana and Atteone (it would be advisable to arrange a thick curtain to cover the window to better show the real fascination of the room).

Inside the east tower, you will visit the small “Optical room”, from where the Lords of the castle could furtively observe the life of the quiet square using an ingenious system of lenses and prisms.

A suggestion for the person in charge of the Rocca Sanvitale and the Rocca dei Rossi:
In the interiors of the Rocca Sanvitale photograph is forbidden, while in the interiors of the Rocca dei Rossi it is not.
In many English places it is possible to photograph (without flash) on payment and it would be an example to be followed, considering the lack of funds of our Institutions.
