Soncino: the church of San Giacomo – 2 of 5

We continue our tour of Soncino.
We visit the church of San Giacomo, characterized by an imposing staircase leading up to the presbytery, designed by Maffeo Caleppo in the 15th century.
The church is richly decorated with beautiful frescoes dating back to the late 17th century.
Passing through the only remaining cloister of San Giacomo we reached the church of Santa Maria Assunta.

A bit of history:
Dating back to 12th century, in the Middle Ages it was used as a free hospice to welcome pilgrims and strangers.
When the hospice closed in 1361, the church was governed by the Congregatio Sanctissimi Salvatoris lateranensis.
In 1364, it became a subsidiary of the parish of Soncino governed by Augustinian friars.
Between 1456 and 1468, the Dominicans erected the large convent complex.
Various works followed over time, but with the suppression of the convent in 1798, the entire building went into a period of decay.
The distinctive octagonal bell tower was erected by the Canons Regular of the Lateran in the three years from 1361 to 1364.
