the village and the abbey of Monteveglio
(Valsamoggia (BO)) - Emilia Romagna)

Thanks to our friend Mariangela we discover the medieval village and the abbey of Santa Maria Assunta of Monteveglio.
The medieval village, called Alto, rises on the first hills of the Apennines at about 853 ft above sea level.
You can access the village only through an archway, the only remaining part of the castle, and, passing near the castle tower, you continue to the abbey of Santa Maria Assunta.

A bit of history:
the ancient village:
The village, part of the possessions of Matilda of Tuscany, had a central role in the historical events related to the countess.
At Matilda's death it passed first under the dominion of Bologna and then of Modena.
In 1527, due to the snow fallen unusually in May, it avoided destruction by the Lansquenets on their way to Rome, where they carried out the "sack of Rome".
the abbey:
According to some hypotheses it was built on a previous Roman temple.
Considered one of the most ancient parish churches of the Bolognese territory, mentioned in documents of the second half of the tenth century, it is built in pre-Romanesque and then Romanesque style with some features dating back to the Byzantine-Lombard period.
It was enhanced by Matilda of Tuscany on the occasion of her victory over Emperor Henry IV.
It acquired more and more importance until 1796, when Napoleon alienated all ecclesiastical properties.
After a period of decadence, it underwent imposing renovations (1927-1931), and its original beauty was restored.

A note:
In 1995 the hill and surrounding areas became part of the Regional Park of the Abbey of Monteveglio, where a number of trails were created to rediscover the natural beauty and savor the ancient history of the area.
