Matera the city of the Sassi (stone)
(Matera (MT) - Basilicata)

After the walk through the streets of Tricarico our friend Massimo shows us one of the most particular cities in Italy: Matera, the city of the Sassi.

The popularity of this beautiful city has significantly increased since in 2019 it became the European Capital of Culture.
Today of course it suffers from this pandemic storm, which we hope will pass as quickly as possible, so as to resurrect all our magnificent and unique territory.

A bit of history:
Several finds testify that the origins of the settlement date back to the Paleolithic era.
In the metal era probably the Greeks founded the first urban center.
In the period of Magna Graecia it had considerable contacts with other cities, while in the Roman period it was a simple logistic pole.
In the mid-seventh century A.D. it passed under Lombard rule.
During the 9th and 10th centuries it was the scene of bitter struggles between the Saracens and the Byzantines to conquer the area.
During the rule of the Normans (11th century) the city enjoyed a period of peace.
In Spanish times it became the capital of Basilicata.
In 1943 it was the first southern city to rise up against the Nazi occupation.
In 1993 it was declared "World Heritage Site" and in 2014 "European Capital of Culture 2019".
