We conclude our visit through rooms decorated with statues and frescoes.
Upon leaving the palace, we paused to observe the peculiar Peschiera or ‘Fontanazzo’.

A bit of history:
In 1458, where the palace stands today Borso d'Este built a fortress.
From 1499 until the end of the 16th century it was owned by the Pio di Savoia family.
On the death of Marco Pio di Savoia (1576), Duke Cesare d'Este took possession of the fiefdom.
Cesare’s nephew Francesco I d'Este, in 1634, commissioned the architect Bartolomeo Avanzini to transform the fortress into what has to be considered one of the most beautiful Baroque residences in Italy.
Decadence began with the Napoleonic occupation, and, at the end of the 19th century, the structure was degraded to cured pork meat factory and the large park to a farm.
Through the interest of Umberto di Savoia, the palace was purchased by the state and assigned to the Military Academy of Modena.
In 2004, after many years of administration by the Military Academy, the complex was acquired by the Ministry of Culture.
