from the apogee to the hypogeum
(Masua, Iglesias (CI) - Sardegna)

Our friend Francesca takes us back to the mines of Porto Flavia, but with two pleasant surprises.

The first one showing us the coast gazing over the Sardinian “Sugarloaf Mountain”, the second one showing us the caves of Santa Barbara where the nature shapes the rocks.

A few notes:

For Porto Flavia see the special "the Porto Flavia mining area.."

Cave of Santa Barbara:
Discovered by chance in 1952 by some miners while they were mining a shaft to be used to carry the ore from a level to another.
The cave is formed by a vast hall more than 25 meters high and on the bottom there is a little lake.
The cave dates back to the Cambrian and so it remained unknown for about 500 millions of years.
In fact it was completely hidden inside the mountain without any link with the outside and so it remained perfectly preserved: now it is accessible by train through a gallery.
The cave presents typical honeycomb concretions.
The website of the province announces that after years the cave at last has been reopened to the public.
