The St Prosper church (11th century. renovated in 13th century) was built on the ruins of an ancient pagan temple.
At the beginning of 13th the pre-existent building was enlarged and included in a church with a nave and two aisles.
Maybe the high presbytery and the massive bell tower date back to in this period.
Many times destroyed and rebuilt, the interior retains a 12th century baptismal font and the columns with Romanesque capitals carved with animals, faces and fabulous figures.
In 1935 the façade was once again demolished and rebuilt with the insertion of a little porch.
The today bell tower, separated from the church, dates back to 1922 and recalls that of the Parma cathedral.
In 2000 the church was enriched by a splendid organ, with 1130 pipes and 18 stops.
In spite of the several restorations (the today aspect is due to the 20th century rebuilding), the pieve deserves a diversion. |
