Zavattarello the ancient village of cobblers
(Zavattarello (PV) - Lombardia)

Settled on the gentle hills of the Pavia Oltrepò, from a distance, you can see the ancient village leaning out toward the castle quite looking for protection.
In the past the prevailing activity was that of the “cobblers”.
The name comes from the vulgar “savattarellum” namely the place where the “savatte” (slippers) were produced.
Along the streets and the stone walls, leading to the castle, you could still hear the sound of this work.

Near to the Emilia border, this territory expertly combines the Oltrepò and the Piacenza cuisine, finely supported by excellent wines: don’t forget that the Oltrepò is a famous oenological area.

Listed among the "Borghi più belli d'Italia" (most beautiful villages in Italy).

A short history:
This area became the shelter for some Roman soldiers defeated by Hannibal in the Trebbia battle (218 BC).
The village is documented since 9th century.
At the end of 10th century the monastery of Bobbio ordered the building of the castle; when the bishop of Bobbio was appointed count, Zavattarello became a feud of the Count-Bishop.
In 1169 it was conquered by Piacenza and in 1230 the bishop rented all his territories to the city of Piacenza.
After the rule of the merciless Umberto Landi, in 1390 the castle passed to the Dal Verme family who maintained the ownership until 1975, when the castle was donated to the municipality.

A few words about the Dal Verme castle:
The imposing stone building towers above the country and gives unforgettable bird’s eye views.
The surroundings, once without vegetation due to defense reasons, now are a nature reserve of about 79 hectares, relevant under the landscape, geographic, orographic, historical and environmental point of view.
In 1978 began the renovations after a fire and today the castle houses exhibitions and meetings.
At the top floor there is the Contemporary Art Museum “Giuseppe e Titina Dal Verme”.
Among the several events we mention the "Giornate Medievali" (Medieval Days) that take place on August.
