Cavazza villa and Florarte 2007
(Bomporto (MO) Emilia Romagna)

The villa is at a distance of 15 km from Modena on the left bank of the Panaro river and, together with twelve more villas, forms a sort of Brenta’s coast in the Modena territory; this area (in the surroundings of Bomporto) is renowned for the Parmesan, the balsamic vinegar and especially for the Sorbara lambrusco.

The land and the settlements were part of the huge real estate that in the Middle Ages belonged to the Benedictine Abbey of Nonantola.
The Lombard Kings donated these properties to the “August abbey of St. Sylvester of Nonantola” around 750; afterwards Charlemagne, king of Franks, confirmed these rights in 776 and the Abbey maintained all these properties from then until 1936.

The present architectural aspect of Villa Cavazza is due to the conversion realized by the Cavazza family between the end of 1700 and the beginning of 1800.

The Cavazza, the last landlords subject to investiture, descended from a noble Modena family. At the end of 1700 this family greatly enriched with the wheat trade, becoming the supplier of the French armies during the Napoleon’s campaigns in Italy.

The Villa’s original nucleus is very ancient and was certainly much reduced in respect of today; it dates back to the Carolingian organization of the territory based on the “curtes”, a group of walled buildings placed in the centre of large farms.
It seems that the structure has always had the architectonic feature of an enclosed court and that is the reason of the name “Court of the Quadra”: The Quadra is the central building, commonly called by the inhabitants Quadra Palace,Cavazza Palace or Cavazza Villa.

The architectonical conversion of the preceding buildings however preserved the most ancient parts: the ground floor rooms in the clock wing and part of the arcades surmounted by towers.
In the central villa, on the first floor, there is a double height dance and music hall with a balustrade which looks like that bigger one at the DucalPalace in Modena.
The recent and careful restoration works (ten years long) renovated the building that now can be used for public and private events.
