Varzi in Staffora valley

The town, on the hills of the Oltrepò pavese, is worth a visit for the surrounding natural beauties and for the well preserved traces of its architectural past.
Walking through its streets, characterized by the arcades, permits you to admire splendid glimpses that the photographs can not render.
You have absolutely to stroll along Via del Mercato, via della Maiolica, vicolo Dietro le Mura, via Roma, via Di Dentro which represent the historical heart of Varzi.

Do not forget however the excellence of the local products: the salame of Varzi rewarded by the prestigious seal of quality D.O.P.

A bit of history:
Probably of Ligurian origin (Liguria is a few kilometres), it is known from 993 AD.
Ruled by the Malaspina marquises from 1164 to their ruin, it was then ruled by the Sforza family.
Annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1743, from 1801 to 1814 it was subdued by the Napoleonic France and finally became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
Probably the fortune of Varzi was due to the Via del Sale, with the freight traffic leading from the Po Valley to the Liguria, and the pilgrim routes (the Via Francigena and the Via Micaelica).
