Lys valley
(Lys valley (AO) - Val d'Aosta)

Maybe the name “Lys valley” could be unknown to somebody but if we call it “Gressoney valley” everybody would say “I know it”.

Therefore our photo gallery will omit the most known places highlighting the less familiar aspects of this splendid valley.
It would be sufficient to mention only two jewels (among many others) that open and close the valley, one of them is a man work the other one is a nature work.
The first one is the imposing Roman bridge (25 b. C.) at Pont Saint Martin: with its single lowered arch (span 35 m, height 20 m) it is the highest European bridge; the second one (at the end of the valley) is the Monte Rosa and it does not need many words.

All the villages in the valley show aspects deserving a visit.
We mention some of them:

  • at Fontainemore the reception centre of the Mont Mars wildlife reserve and the ecological museum (Pra dou Sas)
  • at Issime the church of St James
  • at Gaby the Sanctuary of Vourry
  • at Gressoney-Saint Jean the Savoy Castle
  • at Gressoney-La-Trinitè the Walser museum

To be noticed: during the Middle Ages the upper valley saw the settlement of the Walser, a Germanic population, who deeply marked the culture, the language, the architecture, the costumes and tradition.

[update: December 2013] There wrote the manager of the refreshment of Pian dou Cumarial ensuring that certain inconveniences do not happen the most
