Our friend Massimo takes us for a walk through this charming town nestled among the lush forests of the Lucanian hills.

It is one of the most important and best preserved medieval centers in the region and it is quite mandatory visit it and walk through its alleys full of history.

A bit of history:
Some archaeological finds date the town back to the 6th-5th century BC even if the first documentary evidence goes back to the Lombard period around mid 9th century.
It was an Arab military garrison, as showed by the tangle of streets, dead ends alleys and terraced gardens called "Saracen gardens", and later on it became a Byzantine fortress.
Under the Norman domination in the 11th century a castle was built, which remains still stand on the top of the highest hill with the 30 m tower.
Between the XII and the XVI century it was a possession of the Sanseverino family.
It has been a diocesan see since the 10th century.
