The 1st Sunday of March (except concurrent events) in Treviglio (BG) the costume event “Miracle, everyone is crying out!” takes place.
The festival remembers an historical event occurred in ‘500, the miracle of the crying Madonna who saved Treviglio and its inhabitants from the destruction.
A festival worth to be seen. |
a short history:
The ‘500 was a time especially hard for Treviglio; at the beginning of that century it was victim of the wars between Venice and the French.
In 1509 Venice sacked and plundered the town, setting fire to people, buildings and libraries.
Once the French chased away the Venetians, Gera d’Adda was conquered by the Spanish Emperor Carlo V, who was in Milan; Treviglio requested his intervention and so they provoked the wrath of the French, who attacked Treviglio commanded by the general Odetto of Foix, viscount of Lautrec. The evening before the French attack, the inhabitants of Treviglio, exhausted and aware that they could not last out the siege, gathered o say a prayer around the imagine of the Madonna and Child painted on a wall of the Augustine Monastery. On the 28th of February 1522 at dawn the picture began to shed tears so the believers and the nuns cried “Miracle!”.
The roar of the crowd reached the General Lautrec and the Town consuls who noticed the wonder. The General laid down his arms and ensigns sparing the town from the plunder and the ruin.
The 1st of June of the same year the Commune stated that the last day of February would become a Town holiday.
The Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the tears was built between the last yeas of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century.
The miracle picture was moved here in 1619 with a solemn ceremony and every year on the last day of February the inhabitants of Treviglio remember the event with religious and civil rites, always drawing a magnificent turnout.
