the old parish of San Nicomede
(Salsomaggiore Terme (PR) – Emilia Romagna)

It is one of the oldest Romanesque churches of the area. Placed at the entrance of the natural park of the Stirone, it seems frozen in the past.
The parish rises over a spring with miracle waters used since the pagan times.
The crypt with the well certainly deserves a visit.
In addition a few kilometers around you could visit the Scipione castle [Scipione castle] or the old village of Vigoleno [Vigoleno].

A short history:
The oldest part is the crypt, with a nave and two aisles, built in 9th century for the relics of Nicomede, martyrized in 85 AD.
Here have been re-used earlier building materials as the four columns, the two fluted ones of the Roman age and the other two of the Lombard period.
During the Carolingian period a marble well was built over the spring.
The superimpositions of the various building stages are evident: the crypt dates back to 9th century, the apse to 1200 and the hall to 14th century.
The last works were performed in 1909, when the bell tower and the front with porch and rose window were re-built in Lombard style.
