Thank to the consorzio Parmigiano Reggiano, to the Latteria Sociale La Grande, to the photographer Marco Frontini and to the APT Emilia Romagna I could assist to the birth of a KING: of course I talk about the KING of the cheeses, Italian excellence: his Majesty the Parmigiano Reggiano D.O.P.

Since I was a child I appreciate the Parmigiano, stealing its bits while my grandma was grating it to prepare the cappelletti.
This visit showed the reasons of such a deliciousness: inside every wheel of cheese there is the love, the professionalism, the commitment of skillful artisans.

Come to visit this area (Parma and Reggio Emilia) and you will taste this delicacy in its birthplace and you will also breathe a bit of the history, of the traditions and of the beauty of this country.

A few notes:

Consorzio Parmigiano Reggiano
On the proposal of the Chamber of Commerce of Reggio Emilia, the consortium was founded in 1901 among producers and traders of the cheese in order to ensure its origin.
Through many stages in 1928 the totality of the producers joined the consortium which was called “Consorzio del Formaggio Parmigiano Reggiano”, with the aim of protecting the original product and this is still its purpose.
In 1964 (extract from the official website):
The Consortium implements one of its most important provision: the identification mark in pin dots with the wording Parmigiano Reggiano on the wheel which so assumed the present aspect.

Purposes of the Consortium were and are:

  • to protect the designation of origin of the “Parmigiano-Reggiano” cheese, in compliance with to control the production and marketing of "Parmigiano-Reggiano" cheese, in cooperation with to enhance the production of "Parmigiano-Reggiano" cheese;
  • to promote, to make circulating and known the Protected Designation of Origin and the marks reserved to it, aiming at the general protection of the interests relating to such designation;
  • to promote the consumption of “Parmigiano-Reggiano” cheese in Italy and abroad, as well as to develop and support any and every initiative, also commercial, aimed at promoting "Parmigiano-Reggiano" cheese and at enhancing its image and reputation, including holding shares in and setting up companies or consortium associations

“La Grande” cheese factory
Founded in 1941 over the years its annual production raised from 560 wheels to the today’s 17.800.
Product daily with exclusively milk from cows of the source area and without the addition of additives or preservatives.
