the village and castle of Padernello - part 2 of 2
(Padernello - Borgo San Giacomo (BS) - Lombardia)

In the first part we have already published some photos of the castle, mainly referring to its exterior where we can observe the majesty of the building and the defense moat which reflects the austere towers.
We now continue our visit accompanied by a very kind guide.

The complex is definitely worth a visit.

A bit of history:
The first evidence of the existence of a tower house defended by a moat dates back to 1391.
The present building dates back to the first half of the 15th century and was commissioned by the Martinengo families (the Martinengo 'della Fabbrica' and the Martinengo 'delle Palle').
The manor remained in the family's ownership for more than four centuries.
In 1834, the lineage died out with the death of Girolamo Silvio II Martinengo.
The castle began its slow decline so that in 2002 a large part of the walls to the right of the ravelin, the roof over the ballroom and the slab of the historic kitchen collapsed.
Following this event, the municipality of Borgo San Giacomo and a group of entrepreneurs purchased the castle and began its restoration.
Management was entrusted to the Foundation 'Fondazione Castello di Padernello'.

A note:
In our opinion, it would be an excellent thing if other municipalities could follow the valuable example of this municipality and the Fondazione Castello di Padernello.
