a village in the heart of the Dolomites
(Ortisei (BZ) - Trentino Alto Adige)

Our friend Massimo takes us on a short walk to Ortisei in Val Gardena, one of the most beautiful villages in the Dolomites.
Surrounded by a splendid alpine landscape, the village offers a pedestrian area, considered one of the most beautiful in the Dolomites.
Particularly interesting are the churches: St Ulrich, St Anthony and St Anne, and the Val Gardena Museum, where you can admire the collection of wood carvings typical of the valley.

A bit of history:
The first settlements date back to 500 B.C. probably due to the 'Ligurians', and then to the Illyrian-Venetians.
The region was occupied by the Romans in 15 B.C., although it seems they never reached Val Gardena.
This occupation caused the birth of Ladin language, a fusion between the language of the Rhaetians and the Latin of the Roman soldiers.
Various migrations took place until around the end of 700 A.D.
In the approximate date of 1625, the art of wood carving began thanks to the Trebinger and Vinazer families.
Other significant dates at the link "Cronologia storica".
We would also just like to mention that after the First World War, in 1919, the territory of South Tyrol became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
