A jewel of Busseto, maybe a little neglected by hurried tourists.

The building was financed by the Pallavicino family, the lords of the place, and it stands near the Pallavicino palace. Among its several treasures, we mention the superb polychrome terracotta group “Compianto sul Cristo Morto” by Guido Mazzoni and the fine fresco of the 15th century “Madonna del Canale“.
According to someone, and not entirely without reason, it is the most beautiful monumental site in Busseto.

In the southeast corner of the walls that entirely surround the complex, there is the interesting little chapel of the Madonna Rossa built in ancient times, but renovated in neoclassical style in the early 1800s.

A bit of history:
The church and the Franciscan convent were erected by the sons of Orlando Pallavicino the Magnificent in compliance with his testamentary dispositions.
The works began in 1470 and ended about four years later while the Franciscan friars took possession of it in 1475.
The convent and church were decorated and enlarged until the 19th century and the presbytery was raised in 1926.
Restoration work on the church began in the late 20th century and ended in 2010.
The complex still needs further restoration works, which hopefully should be done soon.
