walking around the walls of Lucca
(Lucca (LU) – Toscana)

After the stroll through the charming streets and lanes of Lucca (Lucca), let’s walk over the imposing city walls.
With their grass and countless century-old trees on the top, the walls are the green heart of the city.
During the ‘800 the walls became a pleasant pedestrian path and now they represent the main city park and the natural stage for theatrical events and other exhibitions when the good weather comes.
You can scour them on foot or by bicycle, admiring the both the inside and the outside landscape.

A short history:
4 km and 223 m long (2,77 ml), they are the result of the last reconstruction (1504-1645) made for a counterwork purpose.
Built as a bastion against the expansionism of the Grand ducky of Tuscany, they were never attacked or besieged.
The sole assault was not a military one, but that of the Serchio waters, during a disastrous flood in November 1812.
In that occasion the doors were closed and sealed with mattresses and bedstraws, so providing to the city centre a relative protection against the fury of the waters.
