the Hanbury Botanic Gardens
(Ventimiglia (IM) – Liguria)

The Hanbury Botanic Gardens occupy the entire promontory of Capo Mortola and cover an area of about 18 hectares a few kilometers from the French border.
Approximately half of this area is cultivated asgarden and the remaining part is occupied by a semi-natural vegetation dominated by Pinus halepensis.
The promontory enjoys an exceptionally mild climate that has allowed the acclimatization of plants from different latitudes.

In the Garden you will find the Australian Forest, Bamboo and succulents collections, the Perfume Garden, the Italian Giardinetti with roses and peonies, the Citrus orchard with ancient varieties of citrus, tha Exotic fruit orchard and various pergolas.

Along the path some architectural elements such as the Nirvana, the Mermaid, the Dragon, the Sphinxes and the Faunfountains, the Moorish Mausoleum, the Pavillon, the Temple of the Four Seasons, the Pozzo Veneto, the Japanese Bell ... and to welcome visitors on the entrance arch you will see the Chinese character "" which means "happiness"...

Note by borgo-italia staff:
one of our Italian treasure which we cannot visit.

A short history:

The Gardens had their origins in 1867 when Thomas Hanbury, having made substantial fortunes in China with the trade of spices, tea and silk, discovered this promontory was during a stay in the French Riviera, he fell in love with the place and bought the old Palazzo Orengo and the land and transformed it, with the collaboration of his brother Daniel, in a garden of acclimatization of exotic plants.
The Gardens were seriously damaged during the Second World War and were purchased by the Italian State in 1960.
From 1987 they are managed by the University of Genoa.
The Regional Protected Area of Hanbury Botanic Gardens takes part in the ALPS OF THE SEA project for the application to the recognition of UNESCO World Heritage Site (alpmediterranee).
