A bit of history:
There are some traces of the settlement dating back to the Neolithic period, that is, before 3500 BC.
It was a maritime republic between 1099 and 1797, representing one of the major European financial centres.
During the French occupation, 1805, it suffered Napoleonic plunder and several works of art were sent to Paris.
In 1815, after the Congress of Vienna, it was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia.
