a balcony overlooking the Tirreno: Fosdinovo
(Fosdinovo (MS - Toscana)

When you arrive you are impressed by the imposing castle, but Fosdinovo is something more.

Laid on a hill at 1640 ft. above sea level, Fosdinovo is immersed in a fascinating landscape: behind the Apennine woods and the peaks of the Apuane, on the front the seas Tirreno and Ligure.
In the very clear days you could see: the isles Capraia, Gorgona and Elba and even the coast of Corsica.

In the evening and in the night the atmosphere is magic with the lights of the fishing lamps.

A note:
To be tasted a special kind of salami called “mortadella”, delicious, but very different from the well-known “mortadella” (photo 32).

A bit of history:
There is little notice about the pre-historic and Roman ages.
The castle and the village are mentioned in 1084 with the name “Faucenova” probably derived form a new pass leading from the coast to the dales of the Lunigiana.
The Malaspina gradually expanded their possessions here until in 1340 Spinetta Malaspina acquired all the rights of the local noblemen and became lord of the feud.
After Napoleon’s victories against the Austrians in 1797 Carlo Emanuele Malaspina renounced his jurisdiction.
With the Restoration Fosdinovo joined the Ducky of Massa Carrara, then in 1815 it passed to the Este family and entered the Ducky of Modena and Reggio until the unity of Italy.
