Brenta river by Bassano to Borgo Valsugana
(Bassano del Grappa (VI) - Veneto ÷ Borgo Valsugana (TN) - Trentino)

The Brenta leaves the fertile plains and wedges itself in the mountains (on the right the Asiago plateau, on the left the Grappa mount) along the valley created by the river itself, the Valsugana.
We could consider the famous bridge of the Alpine troops in Bassano the border point between the plain and the mountains.

Talking about the Brenta means talking about the Valsugana, because they are indissolubly bound.

Known mostly as transit way from central Veneto to Trentino, it hides a territory where the time has almost stopped e where the light plays with the shadow.

Some suggestions by borgo italia editorial staff to those who would like to taste the hidden charm of this territory, starting from Bassano and going up little by little.

After the due stop in the magnificent town to admire the historic centre and the famous bridge (do not forget the local “grappa”), it is better to go on the right bank of the river and drive alongside the narrow road that crosses quiet villages.

A stop and a visit to the OlieroCaves and its limpid waters and then a pause at Valstagna (2) that gave us a splendid Olympic medal un canoeing.

You have to carry on along the road as far as Tombiom Fort with the remains of the ancient Italian-Austrian border, where you reach again the freeway in a deep and narrow gorge.

To better enjoy the charm of the valley, you can, if you want, drive sometimes along the old road going across several villages.

Short after Primolano (3) the Brenta leaves the Veneto and goes in Trentino. Here the valley widens in an airy basin (4) and you reach the industrious Borgovalsugana where you can rest (5).

If you want to divert:

  1. starting from Cismon del Grappa you can drive along the Cismon river as far as the artificial lake of Corlo that is worth a stop.
  2. starting from Vastagna, if you are not afraid of driving, a suggestive narrow road slopes up to the Sette Comuni plateau.
  3. At Primolano, on the right, through the new tunnel or the ramps you can enter the Feltre territory, on the left you get up to the plateau towards Enego with its centuries-old firs.
  4. on the right you can reach the uncontaminated mountains of Castel Tesino
  5. From Borgo you can reach the Manghen pass and the Fassa valley driving along a not easy but suggestive and unfrequented road
