Many could be the reasons why you slog up the lonely winding Apennine roads. We don’t want to talk about the excellent and renowned “Parma flavors”, but tell you about a hamlet set among the chestnuts of the Munabiola valley.
Built following a quadrangle layout, this hamlet plunges you into the deepest Middle Age, with its stone arches over the paths, its balconies and arcades.
The deconsecrated church of Saint Martin shows an unusual front with a tower bell sustained by an overhanging arch.

A short history:
The via Francigena is nearby and one of the early building is a hostel dating back to the 12th century.
Its more recent history is connected to the mine exploitation: the illusion of gold lasted until the half of the 16th century under the Farnese.
Actually the “gold” was nothing else that pyrite, the fool’s gold.
From 1865 to 1942, the workings were in the copper mines, still visible at the slope of Monte Maggio

A little mark:
At the edge of the hamlet a new church has been built thanks to America and France emigrants financing.
Maybe it would have been better restoring the old church of Saint Martin, for its historical and architectural significance.
