Castell’Arquato: let’s experience the Middle Ages
(Castell’Arquato (PC) - Emilia Romagna)

It’s always an emotion walking along the intact streets of this medieval town, breathing the history, every time discovering something new, maybe a corner, a glimpse or a view over the Piacenza hills.. however every step fills us with wonder.

And we are conquered not only by its beauty, but also by its tastes and wines (DOC zone) as the gutturnio, the bonarda, the ortrugo and the local monterosso.

A short history:

Its origin is uncertain but probably it was a “castrum” dating back to the first Roman colonization.
Some notice go back to the 7th century when the parish and the castle were built by a lord called “Magno”.
The first document about the castle dates back to 1220, when the bishop Vicedomio gives it up to the Commune. In 1290 the castle passed under the rule of the Scotti family so gaining political prestige and began to enlarge with many building that we can still admire.
Then under the Visconti and the Sforza until 1707 when it enters the Ducky of Parma.
Until 1860 the Ducky of Parma was firstly part of the dominions of the Austrian Marie Louise and then of the House of Bourbon.
With the 2nd Italian War of Independence Castell’Arquato was annexed to the Reign of Italy.
