the castle of Burgos, between history and legend |

This time Francesca introduces another corner of her island and tells us about Adelasia di Torres, quoting at last some bits by the Sardinian writer Grazia Deledda dedicated to her. Placed in the historical sub-region “Goceano” on the top of a granite rock (2,122 ft above sea level), the castle of Burgos towers above the homonymous village. |

A bit of history of the castle: Adelasia of Torres and Grazia Deledda: <<In the new residence she chose the top rooms and since the first day she leaned out of the window which offered the best view over the road leading from the castle to the Goceano lands and losing across the dales of the Logudoro.>> <<The road at the foot of the rocky hill of Burgos narrowed to become quite a path, climbing among stones and bushes up to the forecourt of the castle and was almost always deserted: the sad eyes of the Queen continued to gaze in the distance and, if some knight came into sight, her heart trembled as the heart of a maiden at her first love meeting. But the knight often was a peasant on his hack or an armiger on patrol.>> <<Also by night, in the pale lonely nights, she leaned out of the window; then, alone in the big widow’s bed, she still stared the road which seemed to belong to her body, as the veins of her arms or the plait stretching out to her heart; she saw the road even while sleeping, as if this road made of wishes and vain hopes, starting from her eyes, could cross the sea and reach her young husband. And when in the morning the mastic trees and the rocks of the path were wet with dew she felt as she had bathed them with her tears...>> For more info: Thanks to Francesca for the beautiful images and the citation |
