the church of San Vittore
(Brembate (BG) - Lombardia)

Our friend Massimo takes us on the right of the Brembo stream to visit the underground church of San Vittore.
It consists of a cave, the underground part, and an upper part with a rectangular plan.
In the hypogeal part there is one of the few Holy Stairs in Italy.

In the cave there is also a fresco dating back to the 10th century, while in the upper part there are some perfectly preserved frescoes dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries.

A bit of history:
Legend has it that the Roman soldier Vittore, in order to escape persecution by the Emperor Diocletian, took refuge in the cave, giving rise to the first nucleus of the church.
The earliest documentary evidence is a deed in which Emperor Otto I donated the building to the Bishop of Bergamo Olderico (962 A.D.)
The upper part dates back to the 16th century.
