Alghero, the little Barcelona |

Thanks to our friend Francesca we can admire another jewel of this splendid island: Alghero with some of its suggestive views. Beyond the cookery (with the Alghero DOC wine, the lobster and other dishes and products appreciated all over the world), we can admire the handicrafts as the red coral jewels (a glory of the coast), the wickerwork and other typical makings. A curiosity: Alghero is also known as Barceloneta (the little Barcelona) because of the Catalan language, still in use. |

A short history: After the terrible plague in 1350 the Doria divided their rights on the city between Peter IV of Aragon and the Republic of Genoa, so originating conflicts between the two factions. At the end Peter IV of Aragon gained control of the city and expelled the indigenous Sardinian and Genoese population replaced by Catalan colonists. After the Aragonese followed by the Spanish Habsburgs, in 1720 it was handed over to the House of Savoy and then entered the Kingdom of Sardinia, maintaining however its cultural and language traditions.
