the rectory of Santa Maria di Vezzolano
(Albugnano (AT) - Piemonte)

This time our friend Stefania leads us in a suggestive valley of Monferrato among vineyards, meadows and woods, where the Rectory is located.
This site represents a jewel of medieval art: among its works we mention a capital, dating back to about 1180, in the cloister and an important cycle of frescoes of the fourteenth century, representing the contrast between the three living and the three dead men.
It is certainly a site of great historical and cultural interest.

A bit of history:
Legend has it that the abbey was founded by Charlemagne in the year 773, but the first document in which it is mentioned dates back to 1095.
The construction of the present church starts in the early twelfth century.
After a period of splendor between the twelfth and thirteenth century begins a slow decay.
In 1800 the Napoleonic administration degraded the abbey to a country chapel, using the finely frescoed cloister as a granary.
Since 1937 it became property of the Italian state and was handed over to the protection of the Soprintendenza per i Beni Architettonici.
